Glossary of Terms

Bid

The number of books you expect to make on a hand.

Book

A card from each player makes up a book.

Cut

Cutting is the act of playing a trump card when a non-trump suit has been led.

Deal

Dealing in the act of distributing the entire deck of cards to each player and the kitty.

Deck

Standard decks have 54 cards, 13 in each suit—Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs. Bid Whist Challenge uses a 56 card deck with two Jokers as additional cards.

Game

Two opposing teams of two players each engaged in Bid Whist Challenge. To win a game a team must accumulate twelve books that count as seven points because the first five books do not figure in the score.

Hand

Each time the cards are dealt, each player's cards form his/her hand.

Hole

Being "in the hole" occurs when a team does not make their bid, they go in the hole by receiving negative points.

Joker

Extra cards that become the highest valued trumps in whatever suit is trump. In Bid Whist Challenge, there are two jokers, which means trumps have 15 cards while other suits have 13.

Kitty

Six cards that are dealt to the center of the board. The person who makes the highest bid gets to use the cards in the kitty.

No trump

A hand played without trumps where the jokers have no value.

Points

Acquired by making your bid. To win a game a team must accumulate twelve books which count as seven points because the first five books do not figure in the score. A team can win a game by default when the opposing team goes seven points in the hole. Making a no trump bid counts double.

Reneging

Occurs when a player has a card in the lead suit in her/his hand but instead plays another card. The computer always catches a renege and there is a penalty.

Suit

Any one of the four shapes in a standard deck of playing cards—Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs.

Talking trash

Taunting the opposition with their lack of ability to play the game and/or with your superior knowledge of and skill in playing the game.

Trump

The suit that has the highest value. Any of the four suits can be trump and trumps can change each time the cards are dealt. The player with the highest bid names trump.
