Cutting is the act of playing a trump card when a non-trump card has been led. When a player cuts with a trump, that player wins the book. Cutting is only allowed when a player does not have a card in the suit led. If a player cuts when he/she has a card in the suit led, she/he is reneging and the penalty for reneging is the loss of three books.
