You bid by indicating the number of books you expect to make along with whether the value sequence of the cards will be from high to low or low to high. In high bids, the sequence is Ace, King, Queen, etc. In low bids, the sequence is Ace, Deuce, Trey, etc. Subsequent bids have to be higher than previous bids, except in the case of a low. A bid of "4 low" supersedes or "takes out" a bid of "4 high." Each player bids in turn and the first bidder revolves from hand to hand. The highest bidder declares what the trump suit is, then the kitty is revealed. The highest bidder gets the kitty and may use it to improve his/her hand.
